The last week of June the church was converted into a Formula One Race Track for the setting of our Vacation Bible School. With the theme of "The Incredible Race" some 100 children from around 20 countries were challenged to "Run with perseverance the race set out for you (Heb. 12:1)." The morning started with enthusiastic singing and skits as the day's theme and key teaching were presented by visiting former member, Kevin Hollister. A favorite personality of the week was "Otto" the Auto, who helped get the Bible truths across.
Preschoolers had their own activities under the direction of Gail Hollister, while groups of older children rotated among four teaching stations. Bible stories of key people who "ran the race" like David and Jonah were presented in drama format in the Bible Fueling station. Fun games, including plenty of races, were played in the front yard. Every day the kids made a craft related to the Bible story. One day they painted wooden cars which were then raced on a special track. The children memorized key Bible verses and discussed their application in "Trackside Truth." A popular activity was for each group to get to make the day's snack-and then eat it!!! They ate some pretty creative things like "locusts" and "boats." The morning concluded with everyone back in the sanctuary to sing and review the day's lessons.
One special project of the week was to collect school supplies for the
children at the Baptist schools in Equatorial Guinea, West Africa. Two large suitcases were filled and have already been delivered
by the summer missionary team serving there.
It takes many people to organize and lead
all the activities of VBS. We want to thank again our leadership team, our
"incredible" youth, our summer interns, and the visiting students from Baylor
University, who worked together to make this a memorable week of fun and learning
for our international children at IBC. We also thank all the church members
who contributed food and supplies and prayed for this special event in the
life of our church. VBS is traditionally held the last week of June and is
open to our community.
